Forklift Operator Training in Northeast Ohio
Akron Forklifts delivers OSHA forklift operator training and evaluation across Northeast Ohio, on your own trucks. Ohio is a federal-OSHA state for private employers, so federal OSHA 1910.178 sets the rule. It requires forklift operators to be trained and evaluated before they operate a powered industrial truck. Operators must be re-evaluated at least every three years. Re-evaluation is needed sooner after an accident or a near miss. It is also needed after an assignment to a different type of truck, or a change in workplace conditions. We train on site, on your equipment, in your building. The standard requires training on the trucks and conditions of the actual workplace.

How it works
The process
Scope the session
We confirm which truck types and how many operators. We also list the hazards in your building, such as ramps, dock work, narrow aisles, pedestrians and mixed traffic.
Formal instruction
Classroom sessions cover the standard, truck mechanics, stability, capacity and load handling. They also cover the specific hazards of your site.
Practical training
Operators train hands-on, on your equipment, in the areas where they will actually work.

1 Who enforces forklift training rules in Ohio?
Federal OSHA enforces forklift training rules for private employers in Ohio. Ohio’s own state plan covers public employees only. The rule is OSHA 1910.178, which covers training, evaluation and daily truck checks.
2 How often do operators need re-evaluation?
Forklift operators must be re-evaluated at least every three years. Re-evaluation is required sooner in four cases. The first is an accident or near miss. The second is unsafe operation. The third is an assignment to a different type of truck. The fourth is a change in workplace conditions that affects safe operation.
3 Does an operator trained elsewhere need retraining?
Usually, yes, at least in part. Training is specific to the truck type and the workplace. An operator from another employer still needs evaluation on your equipment and your site conditions before operating.
4 How long does a session take?
Session length depends on group size, truck types and how much experience the operators have. A refresher for experienced operators is much shorter than first-time training for new ones. We scope each session around your group.
